Overview Of The Entry Requirements

Applicants will be ranked for an offer based on a combination of scores from these three components

Breakdown Of The Entry Requirements

Grade Point Average | GPA

Applicants must have a satisfactory performance in an eligible bachelor’s degree, as indicated by a Grade Point Average (GPA) of credit (5.0) or above. Research honours years are included in the GPA calculation for relevant applicants. This requirement is relevant for all students who are interested in applying to medicine at The University Of Sydney. The only students exempt from this requirement are the ones who achieve a perfect ATAR score of 99.95 in high school.

Graduate Medical School Admissions Test | GAMSAT

Applicants must have a satisfactory performance in an admissions test (GAMSAT).

This means achieving a minimum of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT. The scores for each section will be used to rank applicants. Each section is ranked separately and merged to give an overall rank. Weightings are given to each section; however, the university has not revealed the weighting method used in selection. It is vaguely believed that scoring higher in Sections 1 and 2 is of advantage.

For those applicants interested in the Dubbo Stream, a personal statement is also required to demonstrate an interest in rural medicine.

The only students exempt from sitting the GAMSAT are students that have achieved a perfect score as their ATAR in high school.

The University of Sydney abolished the interview process in 2020 and will make selections based on GAMSAT scores and GPA.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank | ATAR

This requirement is for students who are interested in doing postgraduation medicine but do not want to sit the GAMSAT. Students with a perfect ATAR score of 99.95, will be guaranteed a seat into postgrad med at The University Of Sydney. They would be exempt from sitting the GAMSAT or having to achieve a high GPA of 5.0 in whatever bachelor’s degree they choose to undertake after completing high school. This pathway is alternatively called the Guaranteed Entry into medicine.

Only a few universities offer this pathway in Australia and the University Of Sydney is one of them.

Application Process

USYD does not utilise the GEMSAS portal like the majority of post-graduate medical schools. Instead, applicants will submit an online application.

In addition, applicants must apply for a QAS (Qualification Assessment Service) through UAC (University Admissions Centre) within the application period. This is for GPA calculation which will be passed on to the university to assess further.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisite subjects required to enrol in the University of Sydney MD Program.
